Saturday Ride Out to Llyn Brenig

Saturday Ride Out to Llyn Brenig

Last weekend was beautiful. The sun was shining and the temperature is definitely raising. Spring has arrived, the days are longer and the sun shines warmer. I love this time of the year. New life everywhere. The blossom on the trees is gorgeous, the buds are starting to open up, the green on the trees is fresh and bright, the daffodils on the fields are standing proud and shining yellow. The smell in the air has changed, you can almost taste the spring.

What better way to experience all this than on a motorcycle. Not quite feeling the wind in your hair but you definitely use more senses than just sitting in the car or walking in the woods. The smells, the freedom, the chill of the wind still reminding you of the power of nature and that snow could still be just around the corner. So get out and make the most of the sunny days.

Last Saturday I met with a couple of friends and rode to Llyn Brenig. I usually seem to ride in groups where I follow but on this occasion my friends aren’t familiar with the Welsh roads and landmarks so it is my job to find great routes and show them how beautiful Wales on the bike is.

We’ve met in Mold by the Starbucks services. Or so was the plan. Turns out, my friends really are not that good with directions so they’ve ended up at the services somewhere on A55. I had to go and find them. Luckily, they weren’t far and we found each other pretty quickly. They only had a couple of hours so I had to limit the route to accommodate the time constrain.

I decided to take us to Llyn Brenig, a reservoir located in the heart of the Denbigh moors at a height of 1200 feet. It is a wooded area with plenty of activities on and around the lake, with trout fishery and a sailing club.

The roads to get there are spectacular and parts of it form the infamous Evo triangle which has now been spoiled somewhat by the installation of the average speed cameras.

We had a fantastic ride there and decided to go home a different way which meant we’ve done a great little loop and seen a lot more of Wales than we would have if it was just a ‘there and back’ route on the same roads.

Our circular route

Despite it being a warm day I had cold fingers by the time I’ve returned home as the sun started to dip behind the horizon. My cheeks were stuck in some sort of permanent grin, partly because I had an amazing time and partly because the grin has gotten frozen in place!

I would definitely recommend a bimble to Llyn Brenig if you haven’t been before. There is a great cafe with spectacular view over the lake and they serve proper coffee as well as delicious cake. What more could you ask for?!
